ASSIGNMENT: SECOND GENRE

Different audiences access information from different places and have preferences with regard to genre. The news feature you have just completed is appropriate for a general audience but “general” still assumes some shared characteristics.

The media for feature stories is usually newspapers or magazines so feature story readers are likely adults. Depending on your topic and writing, other factors like gender, race, religion, socioeconomic status, educational achievement, first language, and political affiliation likely play a part in the communicative effectiveness of your feature.

The content of your feature is important! So, in this assignment, we need to shift genres and make that information accessible to a different audience–one that might not ever see the feature as it stands.

The purpose of this assignment is to:

  • identify a new genre for composition
  • research the affordances and limitations of your chosen genre
  • remediate the news feature in the new genre
  • write an informal explanation about how you why you chose your new genre and how you composed it
  • create criteria and rubric for final presentations

The final step in the assignment  is a presentation. The presentation schedule and guidelines will be created collaboratively in the comp section. The only formal requirements is that the presenter compare the shift (content. media, genre)  between genres in the Composition In Two Genres and the shift genres in the Elevator Pitch (script vs. recorded script delivery).
